Episode 153: August Scaries and Accidentally Vegan

In this episode of the Vedge Your Best podcast, I talk about the concept of “August Scaries,” a feeling of anxiety and overwhelm as the summer progresses and the year seems to be slipping away. When I’ve experienced this, I’ve felt like I didn’t accomplish my goals for the year. This feeling negatively impacted my mood. This is why it’s important to be present and appreciate the moment rather than get caught up in what hasn’t been done.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed and anxious because you’re not meeting your vegan goals, try creating a “cheating to-do list.” This list should include easy, already accomplished tasks that align with a vegan lifestyle, such as not eating certain animal products or choosing cruelty-free cosmetics. The idea is to recognize and take credit for the vegan-friendly choices one is already making, no matter how small or insignificant they may seem.

You can also start your vegan journey with what’s already easy and happening in your day-to-day life. Many products are “accidentally vegan,” meaning that, although they are not specifically created to be vegan, they just happen to not contain animal products.

If you take one thing away from this week’s episode, let it be this: the most important thing you can do is acknowledge your successes in your journey towards a vegan or plant-based lifestyle and not let feelings of overwhelm or societal pressures hinder your progress.
